What you can listen to instead of reading

  • Study notes, textbooks and lecture slides you want to review on a walk or a commute.
  • Reports, contracts and research papers at work, when your eyes are done with screens.
  • Ebooks and long articles saved as PDF, turned into an audiobook you can play offline.
  • Anything, if you have dyslexia, low vision or eye strain and hear text better than you read it.

PDF to MP3, PDF to speech, PDF to audiobook: what's the difference?

They are the same job. "PDF to speech" and "PDF text to speech" describe the voice reading the text; "PDF to MP3" describes the file you download; "PDF to audiobook" usually means a whole book split into chapters. This page does the first two for free, and the Audiobooks page in your account does the whole book.

Tips for the best result

  • Use a PDF exported from Word, Google Docs or a website. If you can select the text with your mouse, it will work.
  • Pages with two or more columns can be read in a different order than you expect; single-column documents read cleanest.
  • Headers, footers and page numbers are read like any other text.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a PDF to audio?

Upload the PDF on this page, pick a voice and press Convert to audio. You can listen right away and download the MP3. No software to install.

Can I convert a PDF to MP3?

Yes. After the conversion, press Download MP3. The file plays on any phone, computer or car stereo.

Is there a free PDF to audio converter?

This one. One PDF a day is free with no signup: the first 3,000 characters, in full quality, with an MP3 download. A free account converts the rest of the document.

Can it read a whole book or a long PDF?

Yes, with a free account. The Audiobooks page converts PDFs, EPUBs and text files of up to 2,000 pages chapter by chapter, and you can download each part.

Why does it say my PDF has no text?

Scanned PDFs are photos of pages, so there is no text to read aloud. PDFs exported from Word, Google Docs or a website work.

Which languages and voices are available?

The free preview reads English text with the voices on this page. With a free account, the Audiobooks page reads 30+ languages, including Spanish, German, French, Italian, Portuguese and Bulgarian.

Can I listen on my phone?

Yes. The page works in any mobile browser, and the MP3 you download plays in any music app.

Is my PDF stored?

No. The file is read in memory to pull out its text, converted, and discarded. Nothing from the free preview is saved on our servers.
